I've found this article quite fun to read and I suggest to everyone to take a look.It describe how working on Spelunky (dont' ever play it? Go and play it! It's free, open source and fun!) help developers to think about gameplay working on small prototype, have feedback from peoples and go on, in more and more iteration finding a good balance and perfection.
It's important one think in the article: how passion in one genre (rougelike) have been mixed into another genre (platformer), creating something unique: really, really inspiring!!
I wonder what kind of "mix" of different genres can be done, for example: mixing together puzzle games with first-person-shooter (Portal anyone?) or mixing tower defense with rts?

Procedural generation for videogames
Pubblicato da Marte a 1:49 PM Etichette: english, game development 0 commenti
Question is simple: procedural generation can have as result a lesser work in videogame?
Sound a little criptyc, right? Imagine to have done a nice platformer with nice physics, but you don't have time to design many levels, so why not have someone procedurally generated?
I've found nice resource about this topic, listed here:

My entry for Ludum Dare 20: theme was "It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take this!"
Old mand give yoy a wand to save the world (again), but you decided to get money instead!
So summon heroes, fight monsters, get money and buy a ticket to trip home!
Select heroes and guide them into dungeon!
- Use mouse to select heroes from bottom bar,
- Set target for heroes path,
- Every summed heroes costs mana and mana is limited.. choose carefully,
