On Jeff "Spiderweb" Vogel blog, I've found this interesting article about software piracy.
It's interesting because Jeff explain how (it's and indie developer) prevent piracy and his final statement is this:
"If you're an Indie developer, be nice to people. In the end, the ability to be nice is one of the best weapons you have. "
An important lesson, right? Maybe someone on "big" company should read and learn: protect a game with DRM system, keys, online activation or so on is a waste of time in first place, but can also let companies lost customers! This is unbelievable, but think about it: before buy a game, normally people with internet read review, mostly on major videogame sites, but many reads comments on forum. And what's happening is that many people don't want to mess with online activation or drm stuff. People out there wants only to play!
So go on Jeff and all indie developer: make great games, not great piracy protections!

Fuzzy update
Pubblicato da Marte a 11:28 PM Etichette: english, fuzzy, game development, games 0 commentiJust a small update for Fuzzy: now collecting stars have a nice fade effect and a score effect moving on top of screen.
Jumping on slimes affect kill them, and player jump (for some strange law of platformers!) too.
Bu, wait.. what is flying on the right?

I've found really interesting this post about game design on rampant games, discuss about choices in videogames.
In comments I've found good point on not good or evil choices but gray choices, because truth cannot be on only one side, so thinking about quest system I realize point is about choices.
So many games today give you so limited choices, mine too of course! Player is always in one path and all can do is follow my direction as game/level designer.
What do you think about open game systems and small choices?

Yes, I'm using Steam (for Left 4 Dead 2 plays with friends) and yes, I'm enjoying with it. Why?Because it's easy to use, often there are incredible free-games (like Portal, for example), but I have friends, no worry for patch. Steam simplify my life as videogamer, so reading this article on Gamasutra make me think (a lot).
Steam is a DRM system and DRM (Digital Right Management) from user point of view are not a so good thing (from another point of view). In short: developer and publisher want more control over their product and Steam seems to be an answer.
But from user point of view? Following reasoning from Gamasutra article, Steam help users in having good things from DRM: social interactions, one digital shops, achivements, forums, multiplatform (on Mac too). It's worth ?
For some games yes: multiplayer, mmorpg, rts with intense multiplayer features. But for single player games, no, never. Require full time internet connection to work is a pain in a game like Sk
yrim (one random example :D)What do you think about it ?

I suggest to you read this article, because it's really interesting! And follow their links, I've found this shocking gallery into new york times web site.
It's shocking because people "see" themselfs in games in a very different ways: you have "classic nerds" see themselfs like brave warriors but you can have some interesting surprise.
In my life I don't have played too much Moorpg, so I don't have my "avatar", but many friends have it, so if you have some picture why not share it?

Fuzzy update
Pubblicato da Marte a 11:12 PM Etichette: english, fuzzy, game development, games 0 commentiFuzzy on top of a green Slime? So say hello to first Fuzzy enemy: Slime!
Slime have his/(her?) business around so don't care so much about Fuzzy, stars or platform: only care stay into game for now.
So first enemy is IN ! :D
Thanks to Tommy for support, you see best thing in this hobby is level of share and openess is possible.
I saw his Slick Competition 2011, BackToThePast an say "he have enemies, why not I ?" so just send an email and "wow" it's working. Power of MarteEngine, for now Fuzzy have stolen "only" 5/6 hours of my free time, not so bad for a platformer with enemies, right?
Next point (sum it to ones of last post):
- enemies collision, because slime hate Fuzzy on head (head? slime? crazy slime!)
- some random bonuses
- work a little on level design
- spikes around :D

Introducing.. Fuzzy!
Pubblicato da Marte a 11:28 PM Etichette: english, fuzzy, game development, games 0 commentiI'm working on a new platformer using Java, Slick and MarteEngine.
Features (after only 2 days of work!!):
- basic jump, run mechanics,
- collect stars to complete levels,
- menu and game states,
- some basic sounds,
- sound control icon (on/off),
- basic animations
- levels designed using Tiled (3 for now)
Credits about graphics go to stencyl and for sounds to starcleaner.
For now basic gameplay is only jumping around, collect stars in any order to complete level. I'm thinking about:
- a bonus that let Fuzzy to fly around, like super sheep in Worms2.. so player can mix platformer with a sort of shump, for a limited time
- adding enemies (static and running),
- add time recording, so score can be time based
